RGO (РГО) Hand Grenade
The RGO (РГО), or Ruchnaya Granata Oboronitel'naya (Hand Grenade Defensive), now available on our mobile app, is a Russian high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) anti-personnel grenade, designed for defensive use. Adopted in 1982, the RGO is closely related to its offensive counterpart, the RGN, but is built for a different tactical role, featuring a heavier fragmentation body and intended to be used from behind cover.
Design and Construction
The RGO grenade features a double-layered, steel pre-fragmented body, designed to maximize the radius and lethality of its fragmentation effect. The dense steel casing makes it more powerful—and more dangerous to the thrower—than the aluminum-bodied RGN. For this reason, the RGO is classified strictly as a defensive grenade, intended to be thrown from protected positions.
Fuzing Mechanism
The RGO uses the UDZ (УДЗ) fuze, a dual-function fuze system that integrates both impact (IMP) and time delay self-destruct (DEL-SD) functions.
Operational Use
The RGO remains in active production in Russia and Ukraine and is fielded by a number of other countries. Its design allows for flexible use in combat environments, particularly in defensive positions, where maximum fragmentation coverage is critical.
A detailed 3D model of the RGO grenade is now available in the EODynamics mobile application. The model and our application supports EOD professionals, military trainers, and ordnance specialists in identifying, understanding, and training with this widely fielded munition.
